The maxillary sinus (MS) is described as a pyramid-shaped cavity of the maxilla. Knowledge of its morphology makes it possible to define normality and abnormality so that its three-dimensional analysis can be a valuable preoperative tool during surgery in this anatomical area. The aim of this study is to present a strategy of morphological analysis of the MS using 3D printing acquired through computed cone beam tomography (CBCT) images. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted, including 15 subjects (8 women and 7 men). The 3D virtual reconstruction and modeling was done on the MSs bilaterally, and 30 physical models were produced on a 3D printer. The results revealed that the MSs obtained exhibited various morphologies. An individual analysis of... |

Facial asymmetry is relatively common, but it becomes a disease when condylar hyperplasia is involved. The purpose of this investigation was to describe and compare the morphological characteristics of hyperplastic condyles to their non-hyperplastic contralateral side. Fifteen subjects aged between 14 and 29 years with facial asymmetry and diagnosed with unilateral condylar hyperplasia were studied using cone-beam computerized tomography. Linear measurements were taken of the condylar morphology on the sagittal and coronal planes, establishing the size of the articular fossa, mandibular ramus, and other aspects. Sagittal condylar measurements showed significant differences (p=0.028) between the groups (hyperplastic side v/s non-hyperplastic side); ramus... |

The planning and 3D reconstruction in craniofacial defects based on anatomical principles of symmetry and passive adaptation has evolved radically the past few years. This article recounts the possibility to develop personalized and extensive craniofacial implants. We present a case of a patient with a 10-year trauma sequel evolution; the patient lost the right frontal bone, supraorbital wall and part of the temporal fossa. From the computerized tomography, and by using Materialise software (3-Matic and Mimics). Subsequently, the printing was performed using the virtual planning with a laser printer in titanium where the piece was elaborated with the determined specifications in the planning; surgery was performed without complications in which the implant... |

The aim of this research was to evaluate the risk factors related to condylar resorption (CR) after orthognathic surgery. Was realized a systematic review with a search of the literature performed in the electronic databases PubMed, MedLine, Ovid, Cochrane Library for current evidence in the world literature as conducted, and relevant articles were selected in according to inclusion and exclusion criteria and the findings were compared. Eight papers, (follow-up 12 months to 69 months) were including. A sample of 2567 patient with mandible or bi maxillary surgery with an age range from 14 to 46 year old was observed. In 137 patients (5.3%) CR was observed , with a 97.6% (122) female. CR was related to 118 cases with mandibular deficiencies with high... |

The aim of this study was to quantify the presence of cortical and cancellous bone in the mandibular symphysis. A descriptive study was conducted using cone beam computed tomography where skeletal class I and class III subjects were included, defined according to characteristics detected on dental, clinical and dental occlusion x-rays. From the 3D reconstruction, sections were used in relation to the axial axis of the teeth of the anterior sector; the amount of buccal cortical, cortical, lingual, inferior cortical and cancellous bone as well as symphysis height were determined. The measurements were taken using routine methods and analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test with p <0.05 for statistical significance. 20 skeletal class I subjects aged 23... |

Craniofacial implants are being increasingly used to treat patients with sequelae of oncological resections, trauma, and congenital deficiencies, among other issues. The aim of this investigation was to establish the minimum and maximum bone dimensions present in the most used places for the insertion of craniofacial implants. A descriptive study was designed analyzing 40 human skulls using cone-beam computed tomography; in the volumetric reconstruction the points most often used in clinical investigations for the insertion of implants were selected, representing the orbital, perinasal, zygomatic bone and periauricular regions, measuring the distance between the cortical bones on the sagittal, axial and coronal planes; comparisons between gender and with... |
